A ray of hope

Today the NY Times reports:
"'All I.R.A. units have been ordered to dump arms,' said the statement, which was read on the DVD by a former I.R.A. prisoner, Seanna Walsh. The statement also pledged 'to complete the process to verifiably put its arms beyond use'"
Finally, after thirty-six years and more than 3500 dead, the IRA has officially disbanned as a paramilitary organization. They have promised to restrict their activities solely to the democratic, political realm.

It seems that the horror of the July 7 bombings of London have had a profound effect. How can the violence of the IRA be considered anything different from that of radicals the world over. Maybe now there will be a true movement toward peace in Northern Ireland.
